A concept design for the creative re-use of an abandoned Grade II listed cinema and variety theatre in the second of three studies for the Walsall Leather Museum

Building on the findings of feasibility one, this illustrative concept design focused on one possible site as a case study in how a relocated museum might be developed and financed. The Imperial has a long history as a place of public assembly; a 19th century Agricultural Hall – which was used for a variety of community activities including shows, dancing and theatre – was replaced during WWI by the Imperial Cinema and Theatre. More recently, it has been a bingo club and a pub, until its closure in 2016.

The scheme features a ‘room within a room’, which preserves the spatial clarity of the auditorium and interior details, that can be used for both display and a gathering space for events. A roof extension creates a flexible exhibition floor and terrace overlooking St Paul’s church and beyond.

The property was not ultimately acquired by Walsall Council but the model set out in our reports underpins ongoing work for the future museum on a second site. Work included stakeholder and funder consultation and preparation of a Strategic Outcome Case with capital costs, budget projections, staffing models and a demonstration of positive Net Present Social Value. ‘Meanwhile’ activities were proposed to build relationships and test ideas with the creative and education sectors.
